Season Beginnings

Today we started distributing shares to our CSA customers at SoDa row in Daybreak. It's great to start eating some fresh produce again after the winter "fast". For ideas on how to cook the produce you are receiving please see the "RECIPES" tab above. Thanks for your support of our first CSA program.

We plan to open the Farm Stand on Saturday July 9th when we will begin selling our produce to the general public. Stay tuned!!

Are you watching the news lately? Have you been feeling like it might be time to learn to produce your own food? Have you read the article in the March Ensign about gardening? Do you want to have a garden but are stressed out at the thought of tackling such a project? Here at the farm we want to make it a bit easier. We will be offering 40 private garden plots for rent here on the farm this year. Farmer Luke does all the hard work for you. Your 200 sq ft plot comes tilled, fertilized and marked. We have finished setting up our U-Pick Pumpkin patch and are ready to welcome you for another fun Fall experience!

Here are some things to remember when coming to pick you own pumpkins:

Wear sturdy shoes (sandals can be uncomfortable)
Bring some gloves if you have them. (some pumpkin stems and vines can
be rough)
Bring along a camera. (we have lots of fun photo ops)

On top of some of the best pumpkins around we also offer great photo displays, wagon rides on Saturday and Monday nights after 5:00 pm, fun farm animals, our great fresh local produce, and hopefully by the middle of next week watermelon launching!

PREMIUM LOCAL BEEF

We are proud to announce that our farm is now offering PREMIUM LOCAL BEEF at our farm stand!!!

Our pricing should be comparable to regular price at the store but realize that you are likely comparing apples to oranges when you put our beef up against what you see in the grocery store. Allow me a moment to explain some of the reasons local, farm-raised beef is so much better.

1. Supply Control:
Our beef are born and raised here in Utah. They spend the first year or so of their lives grazing on natural pastures and mountain lands. Because they are not cooped up with lots of other animals they are not as susceptible to diseases and do not receive regular antibiotics and other treatments throughout their lives. Since we raise our own beef from birth we do not use the hormone treatments that many ranchers do to increase the weight of their weanling calves so they can make a profit selling to large feed lot operators and cattle brokers who are typically only concerned with size.

2. Local Inputs:
We are able to choose high quality local feed to finish our beef thus supporting other local farmers and agribusinesses and stimulating the local economy.

3. Processing:
We harvest and butcher our beef at small, local, custom beef processing facilities that have the direct consumer in mind when they are cutting the beef. Our beef is butchered by a small custom shop here in South Jordan! JB Custom Meats was started by Brent Bowles who worked as a butcher and meat manager at Albertsons for over 25 years. This gives JB Meats an edge over nearly all the other butchers in the state and even in the Rocky Mountain region as he not only knows how to cut beef but how to cut it the way the consumer wants. Most butchers have never had to sell their meat on a large scale and are most concerned about how many beef they can butcher in a day, not what the customer wants. Brent and Rich Bowles cut nearly the whole beef the old fashioned way, by hand with a knife, not the popular profit-generating and beef chewing band saws that most butchers use. JB Meats is also one of the only shops that can successfully age a beef for 21+ days.

4. Our beef is aged
Ever wonder why fine restaurant beef tastes better? One big reason is because their beef is typically aged. Aging refers to the amount of time a beef hangs before it is cut. Aging allows natural enzymes to breakdown the hard connective tissue in meats and for water to evaporate away concentrating the flavor. Aging takes about 11 days before you see much improvement in the flavor of the meat. Most butcher shops do not age beef for more than 10 days. SUMMER 2010

Hello to all our loyal customers and friends!!

This is just a quick note to let you all know we WILL be opening our farm stand again this summer and offering the freshest local produce possible. We are planning to open this year somewhere around the first week of July. This is nearly a month earlier than last year! We won't have our full selection of produce that early but we hope to have some of our produce earlier this year than last as we learn and apply season-extension techniques.

Here is a list of a few things we are doing differently this year:

High Tunnel

A high tunnel is a greenhouse that is unheated. High tunnels are used for extending the growing season by providing extra frost protection so we can plant earlier. This Spring we constructed a low-cost high tunnel from a plan created by USU Extension. We were able to plant our tomatoes and peppers on April 22 this year! We hope the result will be offering tomatoes and peppers a few weeks earlier than usual. It has been a fun learning experience growing in a high tunnel. It's great to go out and see plants growing even when the weather is poor. For a farmer it's great, we can even work when it's pouring rain!

Plastic mulch and drip irrigation

You may have noticed rows of black plastic on our farm this year. This is a technique we are using to create better growing conditions for our produce, this year mainly seedless watermelon. Plastic mulch does 3 things: warms the soil, holds in moisture, and suppresses weeds. Seedless watermelons are very difficult to grow in general and even more-so in our short season here in Utah. The plastic helps create better conditions for them to grow in. The result? Combined with our dedication to picking only ripe fruit, plasticulture helps us produce some of the best seedless watermelon you'll ever taste. We try to take the guesswork out of buying the perfect watermelon.

Cut Flowers

Pretty soon you will be seeing some color pop up in the furthest South rows in our field by the farm stand. We are excited about the chance to experiment a bit with growing cut flowers to purdy up our old farmstead and hopefully your dining room table this summer!!

Quality Local Beef

Starting around the middle of July we will be offering locally grown and processed beef! This is one of my favorite new ventures of this year. I grew up here on the farm enjoying our own farm-raised beef and I never realized how much better it is until I moved away from home and had to start buying it from the store. I found that it was not only less-flavorful but also much more expensive than the beef we raised for ourselves. I raised 4 of my own beef over this past winter and sold it to friends and family. We have had so much enthusiasm and interest in our responsibly raised, natural, and local beef that we thought you all might like to enjoy it too. We plan to sell our beef by pre-order and in the stand. Please look for more information on this exciting offer in the near future. Garden Plots

During the growing season last year and in the Spring of this year we had some interest from some of our customers to lease garden plots on the farm. With the help of some new friends and neighbors we have put together 12 garden plots on the North end of the farm here. We are piloting this program this year and are grateful for those who have signed up as "guinea pigs". We hope to expand and improve this exciting community offering in the future. So far I am very impressed with how it has gone. It fits well within my idea of a community farm, where folks can connect with each other and the land, learning sustainability and enjoying it!

UPDATE

As most of you probably know, the frost we had at the beginning of October put an end to our tomatoes, peppers, and sweet corn. We had a great season with these popular summer crops.

We now have our full line of fall produce including great winter squash, apples, pear, peaches, onions, and potatoes. We also still have frozen baking cherries in 6, 12, and 30 lb buckets.
